Frequently Asked Questions about Asendia’s Customs Clearance Services

Asendia provides a full customs clearance solution for eCommerce merchants, including pre-collection of taxes and duties, customer identification, and automated submission to customs authorities. This ensures faster international deliveries and a seamless cross-border experience.

With the DDP (or Customs Pre-Paid) option, taxes and duties are collected upfront during checkout, preventing unexpected charges for shoppers.
In contrast, DDU (or DAP) means the buyer pays duties and taxes upon arrival via a secure Asendia portal, which may also request ID verification.

Asendia uses an electronic pre-advice system that shares shipment data with destination customs before the parcel arrives. This “paperless clearance” helps avoid border delays and offers merchants visibility into which orders are pending customer action or approval.

When shoppers see the total landed cost (including taxes and duties) at checkout, they are less likely to abandon their carts. Transparent customs handling reduces surprises, builds trust, and increases conversion rates for cross-border eCommerce.

To get started, merchants integrate their eCommerce platform with Asendia’s system, choose between DDP or DDU models, and ensure accurate product and tariff data. Asendia handles the rest — from tax collection to customs submission and tracking.

If the customer fails to complete payment or identification, Asendia’s system automatically holds the parcel (typically up to 30 days) and then returns it if unresolved — helping merchants avoid unnecessary handling and costs.

Asendia operates across more than 220 countries and territories, offering customs clearance solutions as part of its cross-border eCommerce logistics network.

In the DDP model, customers see an all-inclusive final price (“landed cost”) before purchase. In DDU, customers are informed that import fees will be collected separately through a secure Asendia portal. This transparency improves satisfaction and reduces chargebacks.
